Staying Fit in the Wintertime

Winter_Fitness1 Staying Fit in the Wintertime
It’s that time of year when we begin acting like bears and hibernating inside our homes. But as you know, it’s important for us to stay active. And even though it may be frigid outside, there are plenty of exercise options to help you stay fit and feeling good all through cold months.
Note: Before beginning any new exercise routine, check with your doctor about concerns or limitations.

Here are a few indoor options that can cost little or no money and have huge impacts.
  • Walk at the mall or another indoor facility.  Most malls open an hour early for walking groups and many have organized walking groups you can join; or grab a friend or two and start your own mall walking group.  Having someone count on you, and vice versa, can help give you that extra push off the couch
  • Create a simple home gymwith little cost.  Creating a home gym doesn't have to be expensive. You can set-up a great workout routine with just a set of dumbbells, an exercise ball and a jump rope.
  • Take the stairs.  If you have stairs where you live or close by, spend as little as 20 minutes at a time climbing up and down the stairs for a very intense and efficient workout.
  • Catch a wave. Find a local indoor pool to go swimming or join a water aerobics group.
  • Free workout videos.  Rent work-out videos from your local library.
If you plan to workout outside keep the following tips in mind.
  • A proper warm-up is critical. Cold temperatures can make your muscles tight and therefore more prone to injuries.
  • Keep your body warm with layers. This allows you to remove a layer if you get too hot. The top layer should be wind and water resistant and the layer closest to your skin should allow moisture to be wicked away.
  • Avoid sweating. Sweat causes your clothing to be wet against your skin thereby chilling your body. Monitor your pace through a heart rate monitor.
  • Stay hydrated. Just as in the warmer months, it's important to stay hydrated when exercising even though you might not feel as thirsty.
Bottom line, doing a little is better than doing nothing all winter. You’ll stay fit, feel better, have more energy and be ready for the summertime just around the corner.
